About Us

The Roaring Fork Family Resource Centers were opened in the Basalt schools in 1995 in response to an increase in student health and wellness needs. These needs were determined to be interfering with the ability of many students to achieve academic success. The school district believed that by removing barriers that families experience in accessing health care, students would be more likely to come to school ready to learn.

The success of the Basalt Family Resource Center was duplicated when the Carbondale Center opened in 1998 and the Glenwood Springs Center in 2001. The three Centers, known collectively as the Roaring Fork Family Resource Centers, are a fixture in the schools in the communities in which they reside. Resource Coordinators in each center work closely with the staff of public schools in their community, keeping abreast of individual student concerns and broader health education needs. The schools refer families to the Centers for case management, financial assistance, and resource information, and request the assistance of the Centers in planning events to address health topics in the larger school population.

The Roaring Fork Family Resource Centers are involved in numerous community collaborations to address health related issues in our community. Representing the school district we advocate for students and their families around gaps in health and wellness services.

The Roaring Fork Family Resource Centers serve over 1000 students directly each year, and reach over 5000 households with health information.

A recent quote from a school district administrator reads:

If ever there was a group of people who are devoted to being the wind beneath the wings of thousands of students and their families, it's the staff of the Family Resource Centers. Whether it means providing glasses or a trip to the dentist for a student with a toothache, or a summer dancing camp that would mean the world to some young student, the Resource Center staff, working with teachers, administrators and parents, fill the needs, wishes, and dreams of students every day. Dedicated to removing the barriers to learning, the Resource Centers are both a safety net and the spring board for helping students succeed in school.
